ISN PROGRAM AT APSA 2012 – CALL FOR PAPERS

The Indigenous Studies Network plans to put on one or more panels and hold a business meeting/networking session at the 2012 American Political Science Association (APSA) Meeting August 30 - September 2, 2012, in New Orleans, LA. The Indigenous Studies Network is seeking paper proposals and volunteers to serve as panel chairs and paper discussants for the 2012 American Political Science Association (APSA) Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana from August 30 – September 2. The theme selected for the meeting is “Representation and Renewal,” a topic that is well suited for a diverse array of research related to indigenous peoples and politics.  Papers on any aspect of indigenous politics are always welcome for submission, but we are particularly interested in those related to this year’s theme.
What are the current issues of representation at various levels of indigenous peoples’ politics--within indigenous communities, between indigenous communities, in indigenous-state relations, and also on the global level? How do indigenous peoples determine who represents whom, and what are the contestations surrounding such determinations?  What are the possibilities and problems surrounding indigenous citizenship within indigenous communities but also within nation-states?  What are the various ways that indigenous peoples are represented in national legislatures?  How can demands for indigenous sovereignty, autonomy and self-determination be accommodated in a representative democracy?  Are there trade-offs between liberal notions of citizen equality and the specificity of Indigenous land and self-determination rights which can be viewed as a form of separatism threatening national unity, and how are such trade-offs being navigated and negotiated around the world?  What are the possibilities for reforming and renewing representative relationships involving Indigenous peoples? Proposals must be received by December 15, 2011. Send proposals or seek more information from ISN Program Coordinators: Laura Evans , evansle@u.washington.edu (University of Washington) and Sheryl Lightfoot ( University of British Columbia): sheryl.lightfoot@ubc.ca. More information about the APSA meeting, and by June 2012 including the preliminary conference program, can be found at: http://www.apsanet.org/.
